Reading Council has pledged to support employees with mental health issues, by signing up to the national Time to Change initiative, which encourages positive attitudes towards mental illness.

Led by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, the aim of the movement is to challenge stigmas surrounding mental health problems in schools, communities and workplaces by opening up dialogue without judgement.

The pledge was signed by Councillors Jan Gavin, Graeme Hoskin, Jane Stanford-Beale and Rachel Eden at a ceremony on 6 October.

Hoskin, Reading's health and mental health champion, said: "At some point in our lives, we will all be susceptible to experiencing a mental health issue. Therefore, it is important that we remove the stigma around mental health to ensure that it is seen on the same level as physical conditions.

"This pledge is an important step in helping to change attitudes to mental health in the workplace and promoting good mental wellbeing."
