Reading rammed with tech companies

Reading is the region with the highest density of digital businesses in the UK, according to recent research.

Tech Nation 2016 categorised over 20% of businesses in the Reading, Wokingham and Bracknell region as ‘tech’ – more than anywhere else in the country.

The report also indicates that the sector supports 40,440 jobs in Reading – the third highest number in the UK. It is also ranked third for the average productivity of digital sector employees. The turnover of digital in Reading is £10 billion – the second highest in the UK.

The average salary for people employed in the sector – £51,575 – is the second highest after London.

According to the report, Reading is developing specialisms in enterprise software, cloud computing, data management and analytics.

The report mentions startups such as Fairsail, Altitude Angel, Blue Sense Networks and Fantoo, as well as businesses that have grown out of the University of Reading Enterprise Centre, such as Datasift.

Produced annually, Tech Nation is compiled by government-backed Tech City UK and innovation charity Nesta in partnership with GrowthIntel.

Dividing the country into 27 clusters, it puts together information gathered from a wide range of sources, including feedback from more than 2,000 respondents within the digital industry.
