New park and ride for Reading

A park and ride site providing nearly 600 parking spaces has opened in the south of Reading.

The bus service operates five times an hour on average between the site on Mereoak Lane to the south of the M4, Junction 11 and central Reading.

There are 573 parking spaces at the site, as well as additional motorbike and bicycle parking. Pedestrian and cycle paths alongside the car park have been improved.

Football and rugby fans can also take advantage of match day shuttle buses running from the site to Madejski Stadium.

Mereoak Park and Ride is situated in Wokingham but the scheme was funded through Reading Borough Council’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund bid to the Department for Transport, in partnership with Wokingham Borough Council.

A second park and ride site is due to open in Winnersh in October.

Councillor Tony Page, Reading’s lead councillor for strategic environment, planning and transport, said: “[The park and ride service]  will provide thousands of commuters and visitors to the town with a sustainable and effective alternative to long-stay town centre parking. It should also take some of the pressure off the town’s busy road network.

“I’m now looking forward to the new Winnersh park and ride coming into operation in the autumn.”
