Green light sought for Green Park station

Reading Borough Council has lodged plans to build a train station and car park at the Green Park business facility in Reading.

The station would be introduced onto the Reading to Basingstoke route, with trains expected to stop at Green Park twice an hour.

It is predicted that the facility will cost around £8 million to build, with £6.4 million provided by the Thames Valley Business Local Enterprise Partnership and £1.6 million from Reading Borough Council.

Building the station will go towards the government’s pledge of £79.9 million to support the growth of the economy in Berkshire and the council envisages the building of the station and car park will be part of this.

The station would cater for those attending London Irish’s rugby union ties and Reading Football Club matches at the Madejski Stadium. The park and stadium are currently solely accessible by road, causing congestion at peak hours and on match days.

If planning permission is granted, building work at the station site will start in 2017.
