A contractor has been appointed to begin demolition work at Station Hill in Reading, where joint venture partners Stanhope and Benson Elliot are developing an 83,612sq m mixed-use scheme.
TE Scudder has been appointed to take down office buildings and a derelict shopping centre at the site, which will advance plans to create an urban square, featuring retail and leisure space and 300 apartments.
The masterplan was designed by architect Allies & Morrison and is located next to the £900 million newly developed station.
Jason Margrave, director at Stanhope, said: “This is an important milestone in the transformation of an area that will ultimately become the heart of Reading.
“Reading is the commercial capital of the Thames Valley, making this site one of the most important schemes in the south-east.
“We are pleased to be working with Scudder and moving forward with the preparatory work on site. As respected industry experts, Scudder’s expertise in complex demolition projects will prove invaluable in this town centre site.”
