Arts hub plans for Reading Prison

Reading Prison could become a new arts hub for the town, following the news that the government is to decommission the Victorian building by the end of the year.

A “consortium of leading figures in the town” is proposing that the building should become the site for a new theatre or arts centre to replace the Hexagon, the Reading Post reported.

It did not name any members, but said it was a “non-political group” that was already looking for a sites for a venue that could replace the town’s existing hub.

Reading Prison was one of four jails doomed to closure in a surprise announcement by justice secretary Chris Grayling last week.

The facilities are to be replaced by a new “super-prison” in Wrexham.
