A new 40-home scheme for people who need extra care will be built with a spa and restaurant on the former site of The Avenue School.

Reading Borough Council has gained funding of 3.1 million to build a development with 27 one-bedroom and 13 two-bedroom flats for rent in Basingstoke Road, South Reading. (Sourced from The Reading Post.)

This is the first new council-owned and managed housing scheme for years.

Work is expected to begin on the scheme in May and is due to be finished in November 2011.

Reading is one of 73 councils across the country to receive a share of £122.6 million from the Department of Communities and Local Government to invest in building new council homes.

The borough must match the £3.1 million grant from its own funds to pay for the scheme.

Extra care housing is for people over 55 years who can live independently in their own home with care and support facilities available on the site.

It will meet a range of needs and disabilties and provides an alternative to residential care for some older people.

The new accommodation will include communal areas with a restaurant, hobby rooms and a spa treatment area providing podiatry, hairdressing and other therapeutic services.
