Reading Borough Council has chosen regeneration specialist Ian Wardle as its new managing director.

Wardle comes to the authority from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, where he was head of regeneration. He previously worked for a regeneration agency in the North East.

Reading BC leader Jo Lovelock said 38-year-old Wardle had been selected following a rigorous recruitment process and would lead a reorganised senior management structure.

“I am certain he will bring a wealth of experience to this new role within the council and help us to meet the challenges we face in continuing to deliver for local people whilst managing the effects of government budget reductions,” she said.

Reading’s senior management changes have seen the deletion of the former post of chief executive and the merger of education and children’s services with housing, and community care under the remit of a single director.

The restructuring was designed to deliver savings of nearly £1 million a year.
