Reading station scheme wins 9.6 million grant

A 13 million scheme to improve access to Reading railway station has had the go-ahead from the Government.(Sourced from Reading Post.)

Local transport minister Norman Baker visited the town yesterday to announce £9.6 million funding for the project.

The money, combined with £3.6 million private and some council investment, will allow the construction of a new northern entrance to the station and improved traffic-free southern access.

The Labour Government initially allocated £15 million for the project but council transport bosses were told they would have to reduce the cost as part of the coalition’s spending review.

Work on the new interchanges should now progress alongside Network Rail’s £850 million redevelopment of Reading station.
